They opened with Beethoven's "Fidelio" overture, as an appetizer. Then pause pause pause while they wheeled out the piano (why not have it out from the beginning? we wondered). Then they did the Rachmaninoff Concerto No. 3 in D Minor, which a pianist I know once told me is the hardest piano concerto since ever. The pianist, Barry Douglas, was RIDICULOUS. I wish I'd been able to see him better but we were in the second balcony.
Intermission. Then they played the New World Symphony, which is always a crowd-pleaser. You can't go wrong with Dvorak.
Brian and I have a question, though. We noticed that the trombones, trumpets and tuba were seated far back from the rest of the orchestra, separated by a big open space from the rest of the brass. Why? Is it an acoustic thing? Is it to protect the others from their spit valves? But French Horns have spit valves, too. They were with the other kids.
Anyhow it was fun. They're doing Mahler's Ninth Symphony next, I may go back for that.
Making spaghetti sauce. Experimenting with protein shakes. A normal Sunday.
